As some of you may know, I have started a new social endeavor named "The Young Barristers' Society". It has finally come into fruition with some terrific speakers and an amazing venue to hold it in (www.universitycluboftoronto.ca). Here is the email / letter I am circulating. Please RSVP me at rsvp@youngbarristers.ca if you want to come: I'm sure it will be amazing.

Dear Young Barristers,
On February 7, 2007, please join me for the first meeting of the Young Barristers’ Society (YBS) at The University Club of Toronto, located at 380 University Avenue, Toronto – directly across from the Toronto Superior Court of Justice.
The purpose of starting this society is to provide young litigators like you, meaningful, cost-effective, and enjoyable meetings and events where members and guests alike will provide each other with insight, camaraderie, and support. The meetings and events will be a balanced mix of social and professional development. I hope that it will provide an excellent opportunity for young lawyers to meet people outside their area of practice and develop lasting professional and personal relationships. In addition, it is anticipated that majority of the meetings will take place at the prestigious, and otherwise private, University Club of Toronto. More information can be found at http://www.universitycluboftoronto.com.
There are several aspects to this Society that will make it unique from many of the existing associations and societies:
- A membership that is restricted to lawyers who have been called for 7 years or less;
- A unique meeting spot at the prestigious, and otherwise private, University Club of Toronto with an amazing food and wine experience from the University Club’s exclusive menu;
- Affordable meeting and membership fees;
- An impressive and invaluable series of guests, seminars, and events;
- An atmosphere of young lawyers all sharing information and tips that have helped them overcome problems and obstacles with being a young litigator; and,
- A welcoming atmosphere for young lawyers to share information with peers and senior counsel to overcome problems and obstacles with being a young litigator.
- An informal and relaxed gathering that will undoubtedly foster business and personal relationships that will carry on well into your career;
At present, there is no fee to become a member of the Society. The cost of the inaugural meeting is $35.00 payable in advance by cheque. This price will include hors d'oeuvres. There will also be a cash bar for alcoholic drinks at a very reasonable cost.
The topic of our inaugural meeting will be “Three Things Every Young Barrister Should Know”. Presently, our speakers include:
Brian H. Greenspan, of Greenspan, Humphrey, Lavine
Marcy Segel, Barrister & Solicitor
The Honourable Justice A. Gans, of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice
David Bayliss, of Pinkofskys Criminal Trial & Appeal Lawyers
Joseph Di Luca, of Di Luca Barristers
There are also efforts underway with the Law Society to ensure that the program entitles the attendees to some CLE accreditation. We hope to have all meetings accredited for CLE hours so that young lawyers can have an affordable, means to gain their required hours.
